I’m Mel. I’ve spent 30 years making marketing work.
Now I’m making it make sense.
The 30-second version
I’m a marketing strategist, digital consultant, and the person behind Marketing, Not Rocket Science.
I’ve spent over 30 years helping businesses - from government agencies and national nonprofits to solo operators and businesses of all sizes - figure out how to reach the right people and grow.
I hold a Master’s in Marketing, a Diploma in Digital Marketing, I’ve completed executive education at Harvard Business School, and I’ve managed teams across three countries.
I’ve built websites, run ad campaigns, fixed SEO disasters, and sat in more strategy meetings than any one person should have to.
I built this platform because I got tired of watching good businesses get questionable marketing advice.
The honest version
Here’s what my credentials don’t tell you.
I grew up in the era when marketing meant letterbox drops and Yellow Pages ads. I’ve watched the industry reinvent itself half a dozen times — from print to digital, from broadcast to social, from gut instinct to data-driven everything. I’ve been on the agency side and the client side. I’ve managed million-dollar budgets and I’ve helped sole traders figure out what to do with fifty bucks and a Tuesday afternoon.
What I’ve learned through all of it is this:
The businesses that succeed at marketing aren’t the ones with the biggest budgets or the flashiest campaigns. They’re the ones that understand a few timeless principles and apply them consistently.
That's not a complicated insight. But somewhere along the way, marketing got buried under so many layers of jargon, tools, and tactics that the simple stuff got lost. Marketing, Not Rocket Science is about cutting through all of that and focusing on what will actually have a tangible impact on your business.
I’ve been part of that industry for a long time. And I’ve decided I’d rather be useful than expensive.
Why I built this
Every week I’d meet a small business owner who was either paralysed by marketing overwhelm or paying through the nose for advice they couldn’t understand.
Smart people. Good businesses.
Being failed by an industry that gatekeeps basic knowledge behind jargon and price tags.
The same questions kept coming up:
- Where do I even start?
- Do I really need to be on social media?
- How do I know if my marketing is working?
- Why does everyone give me different advice?
These aren’t hard questions. But the answers are often buried under layers of unnecessary complexity.
So I built Marketing, Not Rocket Science. Because marketing isn’t rocket science - and someone needed to prove it.
Where I stand
Â
Marketing should be understandable.
If your marketing advisor can’t explain what they’re doing in plain English, the problem isn’t your comprehension. It’s their communication.
Â
You know your business better than any consultant.
My job isn’t to tell you what to do. It’s to give you the knowledge to make your own smart decisions.
Â
Consistency beats creativity.
The businesses that win aren’t the ones with the cleverest campaigns. They’re the ones that show up reliably with a clear message, over time.
Â
Simple works.
A solid website, good SEO, and a decent email list will outperform a scattered presence across seven platforms every single time.
Â
You can only spend what you can afford.
No marketing strategy should put your business at financial risk. Start where you are, with what you’ve got.
Now you know who's behind it — here's where to start.
